Job Title: Crew Leader

Required Duties and Responsibilities:
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Directly supervises his/her assigned crew according to the position description of ACE crew leader as primary responsibility.
- As project /time permits, assists ACE Directors in the following responsibilities.
- Assists field operations manager and project managers in planning, scheduling, developing and coordinating conservation/environmental restoration projects for other crews.
- Implements field safety programs and inspections under the supervision of ACE Directors.
- Makes recommendations to ACE Directors concerning disciplinary measures and promotion of corps members and supervisors.
- Makes recommendations for purchase of field supplies, tools, etc. following the operation manager's budget.
- Oversees maintenance and of tools, vehicles, field-related equipment, including organization of ACE equipment and supplies.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must maintain a positive, constructive work environment conducive to team dynamics.
- Must maintain timely, effective communication with crew, project partners and project manager,
- Must enforce the use of appropriate safety procedures in all tasks.
- Must maintain optimal physical health, including a drug-free lifestyle.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required.
Position Qualifications:
- Experience leading, training and motivating young adults in a safe, organized and professional manner.
- Ability to prevent, analyze and resolve safety issues; possess knowledge of safety procedures as applied to field operations.
- 3 - 6 months of experience performing habitat restoration or invasive species removal activities.
- 3 - 6 months of experience applying herbicides in a professional setting, and able to pass Texas State Pesticide Applicators License Test.
- 3 - 6 months of experience safely operating chainsaws in a professional setting.
- Strong organizational and communication skills necessary to lead culturally and economically diverse crews, ensuring a positive culture and a high-quality, efficient service.
- Physically fit and able to perform a wide variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions.
- Must have the ability to travel frequently and up to a month at a time.
- Maintains professional communications and relations with agency project partners, ACE staff, Corps Members, and the general public.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- Over 21 years of age and possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Past working experience with conservation corps/organizations.
- S-212 Chainsaw Certified or equivalent.
- 3 - 6 months of chainsaw operation experience.
- Possess Wilderness First Aid (WFR preferred), CPR and BBP certification.
- Maintain a Texas Pesticide Applicator License.
- Basic skills in the maintenance and repair of chainsaws, brush cutters, herbicide sprayers, and any other equipment relevant to saw work projects.
- Working knowledge of young adult development, team-building and motivational techniques. Experience serving as a positive role model and mentor for team members.
- Teaching and training experience regarding habitat restoration, environmental conservation and outdoor living/camping skills.
- Mapping and monitoring using ArCollector and/or handheld Garmin e-trex device.
- Ability to understand ACE systems and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Possessing a Bachelors of Science degree in Conservation Biology or a related field of study.
- Commitment to ACE's mission and to public service through meaningful youth development and volunteerism.
Essential Functions Specific to the Job:
ACE is currently seeking qualified young professionals to lead, manage and support restoration and invasive species removal projects throughout Texas Gulf Coast region. Successful candidates will serve as ACE Crew Leaders and will supervise young adult Corps Members while implementing habitat restoration project within the region.
ACE Leaders from the Texas Division will coordinate with land management agency staff as well as the Texas Division Director and Project Manager in order to safely and efficiently complete habitat restoration projects. The Crew Leader will be responsible for project preparation and implementation as well as the safety, efficiency and productivity of Corps Members.
Work is almost exclusively outdoors, involves strenuous physical labor in extreme weather condition, and may involve "spike" camping for several days at a time in remote wilderness locations. The work may involve working for other ACE offices/locations for temporary periods.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must secure Wilderness First Aid/Adult CPR/Blood Borne Pathogens certifications within 14 days of employment and maintain certification.
- Must submit to a criminal background check prior to hire. Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for appointment to this classification.
Compensation: Starting Salary of $684.00 Weekly
