ACE- Associate Director, EPIC FWS

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), is seeking a Full-Time employee to serve as Associate Division Director (ADD) - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Division. The ADD will be responsible for overseeing the division's member management and recruitment needs and will serve as one of two primary assistants to the Division Director and coordinate internally with Division leadership and staff, as required.

Position Summary:

In this supervisory position, the ACE EPIC FWS Associate Division Director provides leadership for staff and serves as the main point of contact for FWS and other public/private partners on matters related to recruitment and member management. The ADD will serve as one of two primary assistants to the Division Director and coordinate internally with Division leadership and staff, as required. The position leads recruitment and member management and engagement for up to 200 interns and fellows selected to serve nationally alongside FWS professionals, primarily at National Wildlife Refuges. Members supported by the position are engaged in a diverse range of disciplines including but not limited to invasive species control; riparian and wetland restoration; threatened and endangered species research and management; records reconciliation; realty; vertebrate and invertebrate research and management; ecology; landscape level planning; maintenance; outreach and visitor services.

Required Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Lead and supervise the Division's Recruitment and Member Management Team as well as provide supervisory support to the Division Director.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for FWS and other public/private partners in matters concerning national-level recruitment and active member management
  • Serve as Acting Division Director, when required.
  • With training, the position will supervise and lead staff Engage staff in relation to their professional development and guide and mentor as needed.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for FWS partners and members.
  • Lead complex, multi-faceted, inter- and intra-agency recruitment efforts involving sister ACE Programs, as required.
  • Lead member management and engagement activities for the Division
  • Ensure, through collaboration with FWS partners, safe working conditions for members
  • Display proficiency with data management systems utilized by ACE on all stages of recruitment and onboarding.
  • Provide primary support to the Division Director in developing agency partnership opportunities through on-site/virtual visits and efficient and effective communication.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and enthusiasm to support workforce diversity in accordance with ACE policy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Represent ACE's philosophy and values to a wide range of audiences including members, programmatic staff, management and public
  • Applicants must have completed a BS degree in social/cultural/environmental science, planning, anthropology, natural resource management, parks, tourism and recreation, ecology or other related disciplines appropriate to the position. Master's Degree candidates, and individuals interested in enhancing their complex leadership skills are encouraged to apply.
  • Leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills are required.
  • Experience with similar corps-oriented, non-profit organizations, land-based federal agencies such as the Department of Interior or other federal or state agencies is preferred, including a working knowledge of and/or experience working in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • Ability to work legally in the U.S.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to provide documentation of an insurable driving record
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, including effective time management
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in an individual and group setting
  • Ability and willingness to represent ACE and FWS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to pass a Federal criminal background check
  • Experience leading teams, including delegating tasks, promoting teamwork, resolving conflict, and evaluating performance
  • Strong desire to enter the public service field as a natural/cultural/social resource professional
  • Willingness to abide by ACE's drug free workplace policy. ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talks and hears. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard/mouse and other routine office equipment. May occasionally be required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs., occasionally lifts up to 25 pounds.
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled.
  • Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
  • Travel: This position requires domestic travel.

Compensation: Starting annualized salary of $42,000 - $55,000/year (based on relevant experience)

Salary increases within the range indicated are dependent upon job performance.
