Job Title: Volunteer Coordinator
Location: Coronado National Forest, based in Tucson, AZ
Department/Division: CREW, Southwest Arizona
Status: Full-time, Regular, Term.
Schedule/Hours: Full-time. Flexible Schedule with varying shifts; 40 hours/week with additional hours as needed
Reports To: Associate Director of Operations
Travel: Yes, extensive regional travel required

Position Summary:
The ACE Volunteer Coordinator will work in partnership with the Coronado National Forest to organize and lead conservation volunteer events across the Coronado National Forest. Additionally, the ACE Volunteer Coordinator will also be responsible for scouting trails, conducting trail assessments and maintenance as well as training and managing volunteers on various field-based conservation projects. This position will also lead and manage the Assistant Volunteer Coordinator, providing training and support for that position. This position will also be responsible for conducting maintenance on some historic structures across the Coronado National Forest. While this position will work across all the ranger districts of the Coronado National Forest, it will be based in Tucson, AZ. Oversight and support will be provided by ACE and the Forest Service. Work is almost exclusively outdoors, involves strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions and climates, and may involve "spike" camping for several days at a time in remote wilderness locations. The work may involve working for other ACE offices/locations for temporary periods.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Conducting trail assessments across the Forest on trails that are likely to be maintained by volunteer events.
- Restoring and maintaining trails that are unlikely to be worked on at volunteer events.
- Arranging volunteer events including coordinating with the Forest Service, ACE staff and the public.
- Arranging details of transportation, tools, equipment, field communication, and work project completion.
- Transporting Assistant Volunteer Coordinator to project locations.
- Maintaining and repairing hand and power tools and other equipment as necessary.
- Hiking, backpacking, camping and cooking outdoors while in both front country and wilderness spike camps.
- Completing all project paperwork correctly, including weekly reports, safety sheets, accident reports, end of week check lists, and others as necessary.
- Responsible for completing and submitting monthly project expense reports
- Replacing items as needed in the cook set, first aid kit, and PPE set
- Responsible for producing high quality work and volunteer engagement project outcomes, including collaborating and communicating with ACE leadership and Forest Service project partner staff to ensure that volunteer projects are safety completed with the highest quality work
- Other duties assigned.
Required Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
- Ability to lead and manage members of the public as well as other peers.
- Knowledge of environmental conservation skills, basic environmental education, and outdoor living/camping skills.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, and often under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
- Ability to adapt to the surrounding work environment and conditions that can change frequently.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, partner agency staff, ACE and the general public.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to understand and follow ACE systems and processes including crew leader key responsibilities.
- Ability and knowledge to conduct trail assessments, independently and as part of a team, across the forest on trails in front-country and wilderness settings
- Ability to conduct and experience with trail maintenance and construction.
- Ability to organize, arrange and lead public volunteer events
- Ability to safely transport Assistant Volunteer Coordinator and equipment to project locations.
- Ability and knowledge of maintaining and repairing hand and power tools and other equipment as necessary.
- Ability and willingness to hike, backpack, camp and cook outdoors while in the front country and wilderness spike camps for several days at a time.
- Ability to think creatively, organize tasks, work independently and meet deadlines.
- Ability to openly give and receive feedback in a positive manner.
- Ability to plan and direct projects from inception to completion, working under tight deadlines
- Must maintain a positive, constructive work environment conducive to team dynamics.
- Must be flexible and possess a high work ethic
- Must maintain timely, effective communication with Assistant Volunteer Coordinator, project partners and supervisors.
- Must enforce the use of appropriate safety procedures in all tasks.
Other Requirements:
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record
- Proficient in English
- Ability to pass a federal criminal background check
- Willing to abide by ACE Policy and Federal Drug Free workplace policies and laws. ACE reserves the right to drug test at any time.
Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions
- Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talks and hears. Manual dexterity required for use of hand and power tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain, and camp overnight under field conditions.
- Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
- Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently lifts up to 50 lbs., ability to lift up to 60 pounds.
- Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
- Noise Environment: Moderate noise.
- Travel: This position requires domestic travel.
