Job Title: Associate Director

Location: Hurricane, Utah

Department/Division: CREW, Mountain West

Status: Regular Full-Time, Salaried (Exempt)

Schedule/Hours: 40 hours/week, Flexible Schedule (Monday-Friday). Additional weekend/evening hours may sometimes be required.

Reports To: Division Director

Direct Reports: Member Support Coordinators, Project Managers, Logistic Coordinator

Travel: Limited regional travel.

Compensation:

Full-Time, 40 hours/week within a flexible schedule.

$48,000.00-$50,500.00 starting annualized salary range based on experience.

About the ACE Mountain West Crew Program:

ACE Mountain West is located in Hurricane, Utah and is seated at "The Gateway to Zion." Hurricane is located on indigenous Southern Paiute and Pueblos lands (visit the Native Land website to learn more about indigenous lands in this region and beyond). This quaint and picturesque town of almost 20,000 offers year-round outdoor recreation opportunities as well as close proximity to some of the world's most spectacular scenery, such as Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks as well as the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Quickly becoming an internationally known hotspot for mountain biking, and IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) has awarded the Hurricane Cliffs trail system one of its coveted "Epic Ride" designations, with many of these trails constructed or maintained by ACE. While the town may never be confused with a bustling, crowded city, its charm is visible by simply walking its quiet neighborhoods, having a friendly exchange with its citizens, or just taking in the relaxed lifestyle and nearby amenities.

ACE Mountain West's office originally opened in nearby St. George, Utah in 2012 before moving to its current home in Hurricane. The stunning landscapes and abundance of public lands in southern Utah have made this locale a cornerstone of the ACE Conservation Crew program. ACE Mountain West crews are based in Hurricane, Utah with field projects taking place on public lands throughout Utah and all of the Mountain West region with projects ranging from trail building/maintenance, invasive plant removal, native restoration, to forestry health and fuels reduction for wildland fire mitigation.

Position Summary:

The ACE Associate Director will oversee operations and member support for the ACE Mountain West (MTW) Crew division. This leadership position includes the management of the Logistics Coordinator, Project Managers, and Member Support Coordinators. Working closely with the Division Director, this position will be responsible for developing and overseeing Crew Leader training, working with land management project partners to plan and schedule projects, schedule crew members for those projects, and lead the Member Support team with creative recruitment strategies, ensure compliance with AmeriCorps regulations, and aid in the professional development of Staff and Members.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain a weekly Crew Member and Crew Leader Project Field Schedule.
  • Plan and facilitate new hire and Crew Leader Trainings.
  • Work with Division Director and Project Partners on project scheduling and growth forecasting.
  • Track progress of project requirements, agreements and financial information, and ensure projects and necessary documentation are completed on time and on budget.
  • Ensure that MTW has the proper resources to complete projects including vehicles, trailers, equipment and tools, and crew supplies.
  • Recruit and hire new staff as needed and ensure staff has all necessary training.
  • Provide operational oversight for field based emergencies.
  • Manage Operational and Member Resources staff teams and provide development opportunities, oversight, and/or disciplinary action as needed.
  • Develop recruitment strategies and determine recruitment needs.
  • Ensure compliance with AmeriCorps regulations.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for non-field and field emergencies.
  • Collect and manage hours, measurables, payroll, and other data for input into proprietary database systems and other software for regular and annual reporting.
  • Adhere to ACE safety policies and procedures; Reports any unsafe or harmful conditions, incidents and/or accidents immediately.
  • Foster a culture and environment that positions ACE for success and ensures that ACE is the program of choice for partners, members and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • 3-years experience in project management, member management, grant compliance or equivalent role within a Conservation Corps or comparable setting.
  • Knowledge of a variety of conservation corps disciplines including trail work, restoration, forestry and fencing.
  • Prior experience overseeing multiple projects and working with teams in different locations.
  • Proven ability to work independently and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • Experience recruiting, including position design and interviewing, and working with young adults in national service.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand and follow ACE systems and processes including supervisor key responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to professionally manage confidential material.
  • Proven ability to track details and organize.
  • Ability and motivation to perform multiple and variable tasks concurrently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work remotely and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong skills in interpersonal communication, public speaking, organization, management, conflict resolution and motivating others.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills with the ability to maintain and effectively support a complex array of projects.
  • Computer skills required including competent knowledge of Excel and Google suites, and professional email etiquette; Strong data management skills.
  • Ability to function as an efficient, effective and adaptable team member displaying professional-level proficiencies in both technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate. BA/BS degree from an accredited college/university preferred.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talks and hears. Manual dexterity required for use of hand and power tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain, and camp overnight under field conditions
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs., ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates
  • Noise Environment: Moderate to high noise such gas-powered chainsaws and other hand and power tools
  • Travel: This position requires domestic travel
