Title:  Youth Conservation Program Crew Leader

 

Exemption Status: Seasonal

 

Position Description:

American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit conservation corps, is seeking professional, enthusiastic, and qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire local high school students for its summer youth conservation program - Teen Leaders in Conservation (TLC) in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) at George Washington Memorial Parkway. Serving as a Youth Conservation Program crew leader with ACE and the National Park Service (NPS) will not only have a lifelong impact on you but also on the youth participating in the program. For five weeks during summer 2019, you will help engage, educate, and inspire teens (ages 15-18) while leading them on various habitat restoration field project.  During the summer program, participating youth will not only learn about conservation through hands-on field projects for four weeks but also gain important skills in leadership, self-confidence, and teamwork. As an ACE Crew Leader at George Washington Memorial Parkway, you will help effectively lead the youth towards accomplishing field projects while helping them become connected to their National Parks and help inspire them to become lifelong conservation stewards. In addition to completing field projects, each week, the crew will participate in one day of environmental education and outdoor leadership development activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As the ACE Youth Conservation Program Crew Leader, you will lead a crew of four local urban youth in habitat restoration projects in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) throughout the George Washington Memorial Parkway. During this summer program, local teens on the ACE high school crew will work alongside the NPS to tackle invasive species management projects throughout the Parkway's 4,580 acre preserves. Throughout the four week summer program, the ACE youth crew may conduct the following:

 

  • Habitat Restoration
  • Invasive plant removal
  • Other resource and maintenance projects

 

Each week, the youth crew will also participate in various environmental education activities to learn more about the different career opportunities within the NPS and conservation.  As the ACE Crew Leader, you will be responsible for the overall safety of the crew and providing the necessary field leadership and skills training to accomplish the field projects, as well as leading environmental and outdoor education activities.

 

Specific duties will include:

 

  • Provide the day-to-day supervision of the crew on projects, as well as safely transporting the crew to project sites
  • Teach and enforce safe field practices and tool use
  • Communicate and work closely with project partners with weekly projects
  • Document project progress through photo and GPS field data collection for weekly project reports and daily work logs
  • Foster strong work habits, conservation stewardship and team unity
  • Motivate, inspire, and mentor youth to become strong leaders in conservation and their communities

 

The ACE Youth Conservation Program Crew Leader must have strong interest and/or experience teaching or working with youth and be able to maintain a positive work environment to motivate youth in an outdoor setting.  

 

Program Dates:

  • On-site Program Prep Week: June 19, 2019 - June 21, 2019
  • Crew Project Weeks (4 weeks): June 17, 2019 - July 12, 2019 (Monday-Friday 8-hr. schedule)
  • Program close-out and documentation July 15 July 16, 2019

 

Compensation:

ACE Crew Leaders will receive a weekly base salary of $520-$560 commensurate on experience, contributing 40 hours per week for 5 weeks.  Housing accommodations/Housing Allowance will be provided for the duration of the summer projects.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Possess strong interest and/or experience teaching or working with youth
  • Able to maintain a positive work environment to motivate youth in an outdoor setting.
  • 3 months previous experience with conservation work skills or related skills (Preferred: Trail construction/maintenance, habitat restoration, invasive plant removal, wildlife management, chainsaw)
  • Proven ability to maintain timely, effective, professional communication and relations with project partners, ACE staff, youth members and the general public
  • Proven organization and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to maintain a positive, constructive work environment conducive to team dynamics.
  • Must have an exemplary safety record.
  • Commitment to ACE's mission and to public service through youth development and volunteerism.
  • If the candidate is currently an AmeriCorps Member, the candidate must successfully complete their AmeriCorps term before June 18, 2019.
  • Be physically fit and able to perform a wide variety of physical manual labor for extended periods of time (up to 10 hours/day), often in adverse weather conditions in an outdoor setting
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Secure First Aid/CPR certification within 14 days of employment and maintain certification.
  • Legally able to work in the US
  • Pass criminal background check prior to hire.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a State Applicator's license

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience working with high school youth (ages 15-18)
  • Experience in environmental education leadership and/or facilitation
  • Experience in natural resource management
  • Experience working with youth in an outdoor setting
  • Experience and understand of working with underserved youth
