Job Title: Senior Director of Human Resources

Location: ACE office location or remote eligible.

Department/Division: Organizational Operations - HR

Status: Regular Full-Time, Salaried (Exempt)

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer

Schedule/Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/weeks with additional hours as needed. Typical work hours of 8:30am-5:00pm (Monday - Friday) local time with some adjustment expected to accommodate specific projects and program needs. Some evening and weekend hours may be occasionally required.

Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Human Resources (SDHR) is a part of the Senior Leadership team and oversees the strategic initiatives and daily responsibilities related to human and people resources within ACE, a complex, national/multi-state nonprofit organization. This includes organizational oversight and compliance of member and staff onboarding, employee relations, and policies and procedures. This position oversees state and federal labor compliance for staff and members and initiates necessary research and knowledge of legalities around human resources, as needed or anticipated. The SDHR is responsible for setting, enforcing, and evaluating legally compliant human resources policies, procedures, and best practices, and identifying and implementing long-range strategic talent management goals.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department.
  • Lead, coach, develop direct reports with an emphasis on understanding key human resource, training, talent acquisition, and employee engagement functions.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention for both staff and members.
  • Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization's human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Researches, develops, and implements competitive compensation, benefits, and performance appraisals for staff.
  • Administers or oversees the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; staff recruitment, hiring and onboarding; employee relations; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development for staff and members.
  • Provides guidance and leadership to the human resources team; assists with resolution of human resource, compensation, and benefits questions, concerns, and issues.
  • Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with federal, multiple state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Drafts, implements, and maintains the budget for the human resources department.
  • Identifies staffing needs, applies best hiring practices, and aligns outreach strategies with ACE culture and mission.
  • Conducts research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics from Paycor, ACE's human resource information system (HRIS).
  • Lead, initiate, and actively participate in organizational Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) initiatives. Execute plans and strategies aimed at fostering a culture that values diversity, inclusivity, and equity. Provide support for various JEDI programs and engage with teams to ensure the integration of these initiatives into the broader organizational culture..
  • Collaborate with Division Directors and other Leadership to oversee and develop strong and effective procedures to meet policy, not limited to training, resource development and communication strategies for staff and members.
  • Stay updated on HR trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies. Communicate policy, practice, and resource changes to all staff, coordinating with the Communications team for effective dissemination of HR policies, trainings, initiatives, etc. throughout the organization.
  • Assists Operations staff with our annual Financial and Single Audits, Workers Compensation Audit, and 403b Audit, as well as overseeing the filing of our annual Form(s) 5500 for insurance benefits.
  • Responsible for annual benefit insurance renewal, and oversees benefit administration.
  • Collaborates and uses ACE's contracted HR service provider for historical knowledge and a nonprofit multi-state resource.
  • Obtains and maintains necessary HR certifications as determined by ACE.
  • Facilitates professional development, training, and certification activities for HR staff.
  • Adhere to ACE safety policies and procedures. Reports any unsafe or harmful conditions, incidents and/or accidents immediately.
  • Perform other duties and related functions as needed or assigned by the COO.
  • Responsibilities and tasks outlined are not exhaustive and may change as determined by ACE.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; Master's or law degree desired.
  • 7+ years' human resources experience with five years of human resource management required; strategic, talent management, and/or business development experience highly preferred.
  • 3+ years' experience in nonprofit human resources senior leadership strongly preferred.
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent organizational management skills with the ability to manage and develop high-performing teams and develop and implement strategies.
  • Experience leading and managing remote teams and staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent public speaking skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Physical Demands, Work Environmental and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talks and hears. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 10 lbs., occasionally moves up to 25 pounds.
  • Environmental: Mainly indoor, office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled..
  • Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
  • Travel: This position may require domestic travel.

Compensation: Annualized starting salary of $90,000-$100,000 (assuming 40 hours/week 52 weeks/year), depending on experience.

Benefits: ACE offers competitive medical and ancillary plans (health, mental health, dental, vision and other supplemental benefits). ACE Staff members are also eligible to participate in ACE's retirement plan with a 2% employer contribution.

Holidays, Vacation, and Sick Time: As an ACE staff member, you will be eligible to accrue up to 80 hours of paid vacation time annually during your first two years of continuous employment, then it increases to 120 hours annually. ACE observes 13 paid annual holidays (floating holiday flexibility). ACE provides 10 days (or 80 hours) of paid sick time annually.
