American Conservation Experience (ACE) is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to providing rewarding environmental service opportunities that harness the idealism and energy of a volunteer labor force to help restore America's public lands. ACE has a national reputation for providing exceptional training and support to enable crews to safely and economically implement technically complex and physically demanding conservation projects for the US Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service, USFWS and numerous state and local land management partners.


Job Title: Marketing and Communications Manager


Location: ACE Office Location/Remote


Department/Division: Organizational Culture


Status: Regular Full-Time, Salaried (Exempt)


Schedule/Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/weeks with additional hours as needed. Typical work hours of 8:30am-5:00pm (Monday - Friday) local time with some adjustment expected to accommodate specific projects and program needs. Some evening and weekend hours may be occasionally required.


Reports To: Chief Culture Officer


Travel: As needed


Start Date: Open until filled.


Position Summary: Reporting to the Chief Culture Officer, the Marketing and Communication Manager's primary functions include developing and managing ACE's marketing and communication strategy content creation, and public and media relations in order to raise awareness, engage stakeholders, and increase support for the organization. This position involves independent judgment and a high level of initiative based on experience and public contact work. The position requires personal communication with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, overseeing all media relations, publicity and promotional materials.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Builds ACE brand through strategic and consistent messaging to internal and external audiences highlighting core messaging and mission; ensures brand continuity through all materials.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with external media entities, ensuring maximum visibility of ACE in local, state and regional media outlets.
  • Manages the ACE website, including developing content and visuals that engage target audiences and lead to measurable action; serves as the primary contact with website designers and manages site updates in collaboration with ACE IT.
  • Collaborates with the ACE Social Media and Content Specialist and expands ACE's digital presence.
  • Manages the development and design of marketing material (flyers, banners, brochures, signage, etc); manages website designer and strategist; writes, edits, designs and lays out recurring publications such as the monthly staff newsletter, quarterly Board Report and annual impact reports.
  • Coordinates & implements marketing projects, ensuring proper approval at the division and/or organization level, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
  • Manages the marketing and communications budget and provides comprehensive communications support to ACE Divisions as needed.
  • Writes articles, memos and other communications to convey key messages quickly and concisely using a variety of communication vehicles to a range of audiences; writes and edits talking points, presentations and other supporting material, as needed.
  • Develop and manage ongoing Search Engine Optimization for the website.
  • Maintains the ACE photo and media repository and archives.
  • Other duties assigned as needed.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Manage expenses marketing and communications budget, as well as the external consultant budgets.
  • Identify and lead an internal website redesign team in collaboration with IT.
  • Develop robust communications strategy with the website strategist and execute to amplify exposure and visibility.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Crew and EPIC programmatic teams, external relations, etc. to ensure consistent stories and messages.
  • Communicates with all Departments and provides answers to requests, acting as a liaison for communication needs between the ACE Organizational Culture Department and the other ACE divisions.
  • Measure and report influence of public relations, social media and marketing/communications programs.
  • Support all ACE teams working on reporting with the appropriate photos, video and content.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Communications or related field preferred or equivalent professional experience.
  • History of professional success in marketing and communications (at least 3 to 5 years).
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • A creative self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset who understands both traditional media as well as digital communications campaigns.
  • Fearless with a telephone and ready to call a journalist when it's important.
  • Strong networking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to help build strategies aligned with organizational goals and culture.
  • A collaborative perspective that supports organizational results.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, understanding, and the ability to effectively interact with individuals (internal and external) from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, disability and ethnic backgrounds.
  • High degree of attention to detail, results-/solutions-oriented, and flexible.
  • High level of interpersonal skills, integrity and the ability to keep information confidential.
  • Ability to think creatively, organize tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to visually inspect products in multiple formats and assess and improve.

  • Flexible, adaptable, and has the capacity to work in a fluid working environment.
  • Possess strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify process improvements.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to plan and direct projects from inception to completion, working under tight deadlines with conflicting priorities.
  • Proficiency with MS Office; Experience with Google Suites preferred.
  • Experience with and/or ability to use marketing/communication software such as Mailchimp and Canva.
  • Experience with and ability to manage website administration; Wordpress experience is preferred.

  • Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record; comfortable driving ACE vehicles as needed.
  • Proficient in English.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talks and hears. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 10 lbs., occasionally moves up to 25 pounds.
  • Environmental: Mainly indoor, office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled.
  • Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
  • Travel: This position requires domestic travel, as needed.

Compensation: Starting annualized salary range of $45,000 - $65,000 (assuming 40 hours/week for 52-weeks), depending on experience.


Medical/Health Benefits: ACE offers competitive medical and ancillary plans (health, mental health, dental, vision and other supplemental benefits). ACE Staff members are also eligible to participate in ACE's 403b retirement plan (vested) with a 1% employer contribution.


Holidays, Vacation, and Sick Time: As a full time regular staff member, you will be eligible to accrue up to 80 hours of paid vacation time annually during your first two years of continuous employment, then it increases to 120 hours annually. ACE observes 13 paid annual holidays (floating holiday flexibility). Additionally, ACE full-time regular employees also receive paid additional holiday time for any normal work days that fall between the observed Christmas Day and New Year's Day holidays. ACE provides 10 days (or 80 hours) of paid sick time annually.
