American Conservation Experience (ACE) is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to providing rewarding environmental service opportunities that harness the idealism and energy of a volunteer labor force to help restore America's public lands.  ACE has a national reputation for providing exceptional training and support to enable crews to safely and economically implement technically complex and physically demanding conservation projects for the US Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service, USFWS and numerous state and local land management partners. ACE's Southeast leadership team is seeking one project manager to oversee restoration and vegetation management projects throughout the Eastern US.

Job Title: ACE Restoration Project Manager(1) Open Position

 

Exemption Status:  Non-Exempt

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Operations, the duties of this project manager position will change seasonally from crew leading at slower times of the year to project management when the project load is heavier.  During the late winter and spring seasons, the project manager will be entirely field based, running field crews completing projects throughout the Eastern United States.  When the Southeast project load reaches sufficient levels (~7 crews), this position will transition into full time project management focused on restoration and vegetation management allocating roughly 60% of their time supporting crews in the field and 40% of work time at the office, preparing the logistics and documentation for the crews.

 

At the height of the summer season, the project manager will coordinate the logistics and implementation of restoration projects alongside ACE Crew Leaders and partner staff. They will play a lead role in project preparation/management/implementation, quality control, safety compliance, and equipment maintenance, and perform related work as assigned. The project manager will play a critical role in project communication, coordination and logistical organization for all ACE crew projects throughout the Southeast.

 

In collaboration with ACE Crew Leaders, Corps Members and project sponsors, the Project Manager will play an important role in advancing ACE's core values of safety, professionalism, integrity, flexibility, quality, enthusiasm, dedication, and passion. The Project Manager will play an important role in ensuring ACE crews are fully prepared and equipped with the necessary project supplies, transportation and equipment prior to departing for their projects.

Typical Duties:

 

  • Lead the project planning, management and implementation process for projects for the ACE program.
  • Perform field visits and provide support on projects to ensure safety and quality control while holding ACE field staff and corps members accountable to ACE's high standards.
  • Communicate and collaborate with land management agency staff on a consistent basis.
  • Directly work with and mentor ACE crew leaders and crew members in the field and during trainings.
  • Prepare project itineraries and descriptions for ACE crews.
  • Work with crews during de-rig and de-brief crew leaders after each hitch.
  • Assures compliance with project tracking records, including weekly reports, accomplishment reports, incident reports, safety sheets, end of project checklists, OSHA injury reports, etc.
  • Write and submit ACE Project Reports prior to established deadlines and arrange postproject meetings with project partners.
  • Supervises, assists, trains, evaluates, mentors field staff.

 

 

Requirements:

 

Project Manager must:

  • Possess Wilderness First Aid (WFR preferred), CPR and BBP certification.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Be over 21 years of age and possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Have the ability to travel frequently for periods of up to one month.
  • Be physically fit and able to perform a wide variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions.
  • Maintain a state pesticide applicators license.

 

A Qualified Applicant Will Demonstrate:

  • Past working experience with conservation corps/organizations.
  • Ability to prevent, analyze and resolve safety issues; possess knowledge of safety procedures as applied to field operations.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in conservation/environmental operations.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, rules, and policies governing field operations in environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Experience leading, training and motivating young adults in a safe, organized and professional manner.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills necessary to organize young adult crews, ensuring a positive culture and a high-quality, efficient service.
  • Working knowledge of young adult development, team-building and motivational techniques.
  • Maintains professional communications and relations with agency project partners, ACE staff, Crew Members, and the general public.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety procedures applied to field operations.
  • Knowledge of principles of young adult development, team-building and motivational techniques.
  • Ability to lead and train individuals and teams.
  • Ability to coordinate the activities of culturally and economically diverse employees to ensure quality and efficiency.
  • Ability to adapt to surrounding work environment and conditions that can change frequently.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, and often under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex safety issues
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with ACE staff, corps members, partner agency staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to understand and follow ACE systems and processes.

Compensation: Full-Time, Salaried starting at $31000 per annum DOE

 

Hours: 40 hours/week
