ACE has a national reputation for providing exceptional training and support to enable young adult crews to safely and economically implement technically complex and physically demanding conservation projects for the US Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service, USFWS and numerous state and local land management partners.

Job Title: Associate Director of Programming, CREW Pacific West

Location: This position is based out of Sacramento, CA or Ridgecrest, CA. This is an on-site position with some opportunities for local telework.

Status: Regular Full-Time, Salaried (Exempt)

Reports To: Division Director, Pacific West

Schedule/Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/weeks with additional hours as needed. Typical work hours of 9:00am-5:00pm (Monday- Friday) local time with some adjustment expected to accommodate specific projects or program orientations. Some evening and weekend hours may be occasionally required.

Travel: Yes, regional travel required to base locations, trainings, field projects, conferences, and meetings, up to 25%.

Pacific West Program Summary:

ACE's Conservation Corps CREW program takes participants, aged 18-35, who are considering land management as a career path or potential course of study and places them on field crews to serve on public land projects throughout the US. Members serve in professionally supervised teams as they explore future outdoor careers, learn practical field skills, and develop confidence as emerging leaders in the field of conservation. Working alongside staff from the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and many other public land agencies and organizations, members gain invaluable career perspectives and mentorship in a variety of areas. Crew members may apply for 3, 6, 9 month or longer terms, with opportunities for extensions.

Position Summary:

The Associate Director of Programming (ADP) fills a vital role as the head of ACE Pacific West's Member Resources Team. Under the supervision of the Pacific West Division Director, the ADP provides leadership and direction for the Member Management Team, supervising Member Support Coordinators, Logistics Coordinators, and an AmeriCorps Program Manager while working out of one of ACE PW's two base locations in Ridgecrest, CA and Sacramento, CA. In addition, the ADP will coordinate closely with ACE PW's Operations Team. The ADP has three major areas of responsibility:

1) Supervision and leadership of PW's member management program

2) Supervision and leadership of PW's logistics program

3) Divisional Leadership and Collaboration with the Associate Director of Operations and other Operations Team staff to align and integrate programmatic and operational aspects of the division

The incumbent will lead PW Division staff to develop and implement outreach, recruitment, onboarding, compliance, development, disciplinary, and other member-related processes and strategies to ensure a diverse, well-prepared, and functional cadre of corpsmembers while also overseeing logistical processes related to housing, transportation, and provisioning for members. The ADP will also engage with staff from other divisions and from ACE's national team, contributing towards larger programmatic goals and ensuring the integration of ACE-wide initiatives into Pacific West programming. The ADP will frequently interact with ACE's AmeriCorps members, other ACE staff, and the general public. As such the incumbent is expected to maintain a professional demeanor, positive attitude, and willingness to act as an ambassador of ACE's program and brand at all times. The ADP will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, and enthusiastic while working in a fast-paced office environment. Leadership and strategic planning are essential assets in this position. The ADP must be based at one of ACE PW's two field base locations in Sacramento, CA or Ridgecrest, CA. The position requires regional travel (25%) alongside office work (75%).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervision and Leadership of Member Support Program

  • Serve as direct supervisor for Member Support Coordinators (MSCs) and the AmeriCorps Program Manager (ACPM) in the PW division. Provide training, develop work plans, and hold staff responsible to assigned duties.
  • Collaborate with MSCs, the ACPM, and national staff to develop and implement a robust outreach, marketing, recruitment, compliance, development, and retention plan for the PW division with an emphasis on serving a diverse pool of members from a wide array of backgrounds. Utilize the ACE website, social media, outreach events, policy documents, and other avenues effectively while coordinating with other divisions and national staff to ensure consistent messaging.

Supervision and Leadership of Logistics Program

  • Serve as direct supervisor for Logistics Coordinators (LCs) in the PW division. Provide training, develop work plans, and hold LCs responsible to assigned duties.
  • Collaborate with LCs and national staff to ensure all facilities, fleet vehicles, and crew food provisions are in order, well-maintained, and sufficient to the needs of the PW division. Assist in development and enforcement of standardized regulations for ACE service including drug- and alcohol-free housing policies.

Divisional Leadership and Collaboration with Operations Team Staff

  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Operations and other Operations Team staff to ensure the smooth and effective flow of communications necessary to maintain a functioning and successful conservation corps.
  • Participate in strategic planning and setting priorities for the future of the division, including budgeting, division growth, and expansion to new markets.
  • Foster a culture and environment that positions ACE for success and ensures that ACE is the program of choice for partners, members and staff.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in nonprofit management, conservation management, resource management, or a related field, and 3-4 years of experience working with conservation organizations, including at least two years of supervisory experience; OR any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position at the discretion of the Pacific West Division Director.
  • Experience working with or within a conservation corps is preferred.
  • Ability to work remotely and independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to manage and train remote staff, when needed.
  • Strength in managing and supporting staff in a remote work environment.
  • Computer competency with experience using a variety of software and database systems, preferably Microsoft Office Suite and the entire Google platform.
  • Strong skills in leadership, interpersonal communication, organization, management, conflict resolution and motivating others.
  • Commitment to ACE's mission of public service through youth development and volunteerism.
  • Ability to receive and provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • A deep and continuing interest in the welfare and professional development of ACE participants.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Physical Demands, Work Environmental and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talks and hears. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard/mouse and other routine office equipment. May occasionally be required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 10 lbs., occasionally moves up to 25 pounds.
  • Environmental: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
  • Travel: This position requires local, domestic travel.

Compensation: Annualized salary range of $70,000 - $80,000 (assuming 40 hours/week 52 weeks/year), depending on experience.
